Conjugaison des verbes en -ER

PARLER
je parle tu parles il / elle / on parle nous parlons vous parlez ils / elles parlent
The vast majority of -ER verbs follow this pattern.
Simply remove -er from the infinitive to get the stem,
then add the endings shown on the left.
! The endings -e, -es, -ent are silent.
Only -ons and -ez (nous, vous) are pronounced.
Exemple
— Est-ce que vous parlez français ?
— Oui, je parle français, anglais et espagnol.

Cas particuliers

COMMENCER
je commence tu commences il / elle / on commence nous commençons vous commencez ils / elles commencent
! The -ce- combination is /s/, but -co- would be /k/.
A cedilla (ç) is added to preserve the /s/ sound in nous commençons.
MANGER
je mange tu manges il / elle / on mange nous mangeons vous mangez ils / elles mangent
! Similarly, -ge- is /ʒ/ (like s in measure), but -go- would be /ɡ/.
An -e- is added after g to preserve the /ʒ/ sound in nous mangeons.
APPELER
j'appelle /ɛ/ (approx. e in bed) tu appelles il / elle / on appelle nous appelons /ə/ (approx. u in but) vous appelez ils / elles appellent
! Double l → tense /ɛ/ vowel. Single l → neutral /ə/ vowel.
(Approximations — exact sound varies by accent.)
ACHETER
j'achète /ɛ/ (approx. e in bed) tu achètes il / elle / on achète nous achetons /ə/ (approx. u in but) vous achetez ils / elles achètent
! Silent ending → stem vowel becomes /ɛ/ (accent grave: è).
Pronounced ending (nous, vous) → vowel stays /ə/ (no accent).
(Approximations — exact sound varies by accent.)
